10 miles or so. In Watertown in the afternoon. I ran from the Ramkota to SD20 north of the airport. Ran along the airport on the western side. Started out feeling cold, but eventually I warmed up. Great run. Felt great the whole time. My knee was a bit sore at the beginning, but after about a mile, felt just fine. |

14 miles. I wanted to run 18, but I ran out of time to run, as I had firefighter training at 6pm. Oh well. Maybe I’ll run this evening, though I doubt it. This weekend was cold, so I didn’t feel like running this weekend. I probably ran this run too fast. We’ll see later this week when it matters. |

Track Practice. Wet and nasty. Great run for the kids. The wind was pretty strong from the East, and it was nice and sunny. However, the ground around Old Wall Lake was MUDDY. Stuck to the shoes and kept things interesting. Felt like a good run, and felt like I was running at a nice moderate pace. Hopefully wasn’t too fast. Weather was chilly. Even with gloves and a hat, I felt comfortable. |

17 miles. Tough workout. I gave 2 pints of blood with apheresis on Monday. I could really tell on the run. I misplaced my HRM, so I don’t know what my HRM was, but it felt high, despite my relatively slow pace. My next donation time would be in July, so I’ll have to consider if I want to give blood so close to the race. Temperature was 40 degrees with a WNW wind of about 10 mph. Overall, it was a good run, but I was spent at the end. Had to walk up the big hill on the way home. |

13.5 miles. I meant to run 15 miles, but I must have mapped the route incorrectly. I ran to Quinn, and then to the Mt. Hope Cemetery past Quinn. It seemed like the run to the cemetery was too short, but now I understand why. It was only .9 miles. However, the run felt great, and I definitely could have run another 1.5 miles when I was finished. Alas, I have time commitments and am unable to do such a feat. Weather was phenomenal. 55 when I started, 64 when I finished. 9 mph breeze from the South. I didn’t suffer any blisters, which was a nice change from last time I ran to Wasta. I can’t decide if my feet are hardening up, which is likely, or if I did a better job hydrating earlier in the run, which is likely, or if it’s a combination of factors. It may just be wearing in the new shoes too. I have no idea when I reached my max HR. May have been at the end, or it could have been on the uphill out of Quinn. AvgHR: 147 MaxHR: 167 |

Sheep Mountain Table in the Stronhold Unit of the Badlands National Park. COLD! Was 22 degrees with a windchill of 3 degrees. The wind was gusting to 35 mph, which made for some interesting running. Very cold, and very windy. Rough run. Felt like longer than 12 miles when I was finished. Was a pretty view at the turnaround point. I may have enjoyed it more if it wasn’t so cold and my Camelbak mouthpiece wasn’t frozen. Got pretty dehydrated, which I didn’t notice until the end. I love trail running! AvgHR: 154 |

Great run. First run in a while because it’s been so COLD here. Also went skiing this weekend. I figured I had better get in the long miles while the weather held. The temperature was in the 40s. Great weather. Strong wind. The road to the New Wall Lake was dang muddy. FUN! I reached my max HR on the uphill area coming out of the Kelly Addition. 8m run. Ran in Rapid City. Started out at Canyon Lake UMC, ran to Canyon Lake. Ran down the Rapid City Creek to West Main. Then ran back up Rapid City Creek trail, and cut off at Canyon Lake Dr. Ran back to the church. Run was great. First really warm run day of the training period. So NICE. Avg HR: 149, Max HR: 157. |

8m. Was supposed to have run yesterday, but time ran out. Woke up early and had a hankering to go running, so I went. Unfortunately, that made me 5 minutes late to work. No idea on heart rate. The run was tiring, but that’s because I had no breakfast. |

5m run. Lots of snow. Ran out past the landfill. Running in snow is just as hard or harder than running in the sand. Merle had lots of fun. |

8m pace. Alison rode her MTB next to me. Ran out to Bruce Dam and back. Same route as Tuesday, but counting mileage from the house. On the big hill on the way back, sprinted up it and beat Alison, but it killed my time and legs. Going out: 33.5 minutes. Coming home: 38.5 minutes. Big difference. Avg HR: 150, Max HR: 169 |

8m. Great feeling run. Temperature was chilly, but I felt great. Even though my heart rate was higher than Saturday’s run, the run felt easier. Perhaps it’s because I took off last week, and that was not a smart move. Avg HR: 151, Max HR: 161. |

14m LSR. Felt great. I ran from the Visitor Center in the Badlands NP to White River Basin Overlook. Norbeck Pass was quite steep. Heart rate monitor was a slave driver. I had to sprint on the downhill portion of Norbeck Pass, which was probably not good for my quads. Avg HR: 147, Max HR: 159. |

12 miles LSR. From Prairie Winds Overlook in the Badlands NP to halfway between Homestead Overlook and Conata Basin Overlook. The first four miles felt horrible. I was out of breath and my legs felt crappy. After taking an energy gel, and walking for about 100 feet, I felt great. I doubt that the energy gel had anything to do with it. Perhaps my legs just needed a “breaking in.” |

Buffalo Gap National Grasslands. I ran an attempt at the Buffalo Gap National Grasslands trail, but at some point, I ended up on a different trail and started heading south. I realized that I was going the wrong way, but didn’t care, because I figured I’d just do an out and back. Seemed very windy when I was running into the wind, although it was probably just a steady 5mph wind. |
