Default Run and age - 12-23-2006, 06:44 PM

My son is 13 years old and he has been running 13 miles maximum during practice. do you think his age is a factor for running such a race as a marathon?

Most marathons have a minimum age requirement of at least 16 and usually 18years old. Age 13 is a factor because many of your cartridges, ligaments, and bones have not fully developed yet

Congratulations to you and your son for maintaining such a high level of training and fitness. So many kids are more interested in sitting at the computer, playing video games or watching TV.

I have to ask though? Why the marathon? There are so many races of shorter distances that he could get into and have fun with? Has he done any community races such as 5K's, 10K's etc?

Running this many miles at 13 is an accomplishment in of itself to be proud of and there's no need to rush into things. Your kid could have a long and distinguished running career ahead of him. I wish I was that dedicated at 13.

Great Dedication at the age of 13! Be careful, though. My sister, at the age of 11, ran a marathon. While it was cool, seeing her set such a record in our community, she never ran again. Totally burned her out, emotionally and physically. So many great runs around in the 10-15k bracket, those are a blast!

I am not a runner but I am an occupational therapist. I would wonder if running a marathon at age 13 would affect the growth plates in your sons bones. Harm to the growth plates is why weight lifting is contraindicated for children and teens.
