Default Why is it so difficult? - 12-24-2006, 08:24 AM

Why is it harder for me to run outside than it is inside on a treadmill? I'm guessing terrain has something to do with it, or maybe the digital readout on the treadmill keeps me motivated because I know exactly where I stand with distance and speed. Has anyone else encountered this?

If you're running primarily for health benefits or weight loss, that might be the reason. Like you said, it's easier to measure your status and progress on an exercise machine. However, most people I've encountered who run for fun like to run outside or at least on an indoor track. It's more freeing, not to mention way more realistic if you plan on racing.

Cool One Simple Reason.... - 01-14-2007, 05:00 AM

Ok, actually maybe there are two. But I've always been told, and it's definitely believable, that the main reason treadmill running is easier is because of lack of wind resistance. You're essentially running in place as opposed to pushing and displacing the air mass in front of you.

The second one I think of is lack of variety in terrain. Much the same reason it is technically easier to run a few miles on a track than it is on the road.

The track and treadmill for me are 100 times more boring that being out on the road, or better yet, a beautiful trail or path. I especially like to be near water. Being flowing or still. Give your mind and your senses a treat, try going outside and give the treadmill a break.
