Hello ,
I am new here. I recently started to run short distances and I still havent found any problem like low blood sugars or other things. I would like to know if diabetics person who is running marathons, and what are the affects on them.
I am glad such a nice new website here to talk about running guidance.
Have you discussed your plans with your endocrinologist and nutritionist? If not, do so before you undertake any type of endurance training. I am a type 2 diabetic. In my normal day to day routine I have to be more concerned with high blood sugar but when I do long runs (15 miles or more) even my BG levels become low. That aside, all of the sports drinks and "power" boosters are high carb. I also suggest having a training buddy that's not diabetic and is knowledgeable of your situation. I handle breakfast on long run and race days with a big bowl of oatmeal with applesauce and sliced bananas mixed in. It's high carb and somewhat bland. I always have a case of nerves on these days and couldn't tolerate much of anything else.
I'm not one yet... but that's my goal. Started running two weeks before TG with a Turkey Run 5k as my goal. I'm up to 5.5 miles once a week and trying to build a couple 4.5 into my weekly schedule (3m is my normal short day - I run 6days). When I start needing to eating, I'll try for fruit, home made power bars or SF bars.
