Default Tips - 12-14-2006, 12:07 AM

I've been running on and off for the past 3 years, and I've always had a rough time staying on a consistent regime.

Anyone have any tips for beginners? What helped you stay motivated when you first started?

Like going to a health club, you must have running partners.

Hey dad, I'm with you here on this one. Sometimes finding motivation can be tough. For me it helps that I have personal athletic goals I hope to accomplish and I know that although I'm a long ways off, I'm only going to get there, one step at a time. One of the biggest things running has taught me is to have patience and persistence. This does not come overnight but it comes if you stick with it.

Do you keep a training log. In times when I've been off and on, whenever I looked at my log and saw huge gaps of no activity, I'd feel like a louse and get up and do something.

Having heroes helps too. Mentors if you will. Although I don't know all of them personally, there are athletic greats that I look up to, and in my mind at least aspire to be just like them. I know that there are no short cuts and getting there took hard work. Of course, it doesn't help that I'm also under tremendous family pressure. My brother in law is in the Track & Field Hall of Fame and has consistently been ranked number one or two in his master age bracket. My sister is a top ranked marathoner and president of the local Road Runners club. Then there's me.

We all have different reasons why we run, but none of them can be fulfilled by sitting around thinking about it. Get up and get out and run. What are doing around here reading still.

Long term motivation for me has been the transformation of my body from pudget to lean muscle. It's nice when your wife and your friends start to notice you in a swimsuit - for the right reasons.
