Running in Hawaii -
08-08-2007, 03:15 AM
I just came back from a 8 day family vacation in Hawaii. This was
definitely the best family vacation we've ever had. Not only I enjoyed all
the activities, but also learned a lot about a place that I knew nearly
nothing about....
Regarding running, after the first day, I managed to run every single day,
in the morning. I started with a 17.5 mile run on Tuesday in Maui
(actually, 20 miles if you count walking too), followed by 10, and then 8,
3, 6, and 9 miles in the Big Island.
The interesting thing is that the temperature in the Big Island was nearly
constant, about 80F. So it was 80F at 5:00 am and 80F at noon (warmer if you
were running in the sun of course, but the air temperature is nearly
constant).
In the Big Island I discovered this "trail" called "King's Trail". That's
not like the trails we have in Ohio.... It is a straight and narrow path
with lava rocks, very difficult to run... The total length of the trail is
32 miles but I only ran a small part of it, early in the morning always.
Part of the trail is covered with Petroglyphs (drawings in lava rocks, very
interesting. ..).
We came back from this Heaven to find Hell in Ohio... Stormy, hot and very
humid... I tried to run 2 miles and was drenched in sweat... Oh well... I'll
get used to it.
Since Mach 6 that I have kept records (that's when I got my Garmin GPS
watch) I have run 800 miles. A simple calculation shows that assuming
similar mileage for the first part of the year, this comes to about 1000
miles so far this year for me too.
