Default Training for the very first marathon - 12-07-2006, 09:19 AM

I am taking training for my very first marathon. As I have a time I am planning to use it wisely. I never even decided to run until recently, after I was forced by friends and family to train for several adventure races over the last year. I always prefer mountain biking on a regular basis. I have a very comfortable 8-9 mile running base, as far as the distance. As I am strictly following the training schedule, I was looking for feedback from runners who have done marathons before regarding your first experience

Any Feedback is appreciated.

I've been running for about 8 years now and I am also a gym instructor.

I believe a marathon can be undertaken with the longest training being no more than 15-16 miles. And these long runs should be limited to once every 2 weeks. You should however have a good base of up to about 10 miles, 4 times a week Build up your long runs from here with no more than 10% increase.

I recommend you take 20 weeks to prepare for marathon.

Hope it helps
